Op-Amp Sound Light

This article presents a sound light system made form a simple operational amplifier circuit.

Step 1: Design the Circuit

I added a diode and a capacitor to filter the output signal, thus slow down and improve the output lighting characteristic.

The capacitor makes the LEDs turn ON and OFF at lower frequency or longer intervals.

Calculate the maximum LED current:
IledMax = (Vs - Vsat - Vled) / Ro
= (5 V - 1.1 V - 2 V) / 180 ohms = 1.9 V / 180 ohms
= 0.01055555555 A = 10.55555555 mA

You might need to use a lower Ro value because the op-amp saturation voltage could be higher that 1.1 V. However, if you assume 2 V saturation voltage and maximum op-amp output is above about 3.5 V you might burn the LED.

Step 2: Simulations

Load voltage analysis:

Load current analysis:

The load current is almost 10 mA that is appropriate current for bright LEDs.

Spectral Analysis:

The bandwidth seems to be very high for Rf value of 1 Megohms.
